“What was really interesting for me in casting Jennifer Lawrence in mother!, was that she had never done anything like this before. And it’s not very connected to who she is. In Silver Linings Playbook, she’s incredible, but it captures her spirit. And that was exciting and scary for me. I didn’t know if she could do it, to show this other side of humanity. Someone who is a caregiver, filled with love that was in the shadows, that was spoken down to, that was under-appreciated and that had this gentle voice. And it was a challenge she really really wanted to take. And I didn’t really see it come alive until we started shooting. And then I was just overwhelmed with her gift, which is unlike any gift I’ve seen. She’s taught herself how to act and she’s a great actress who is able to do all types of emotions, but she’s also this incredible technical actor too. Sometimes after a take I’ll give an actor two or three notes and they can pull that off. Jen was always pushing me to give her more and more notes. I’d say “oh I have a few notes” and she’d say “alright give me them all” and I’d be like “there is no way you can do them all” and I’d give her seven notes and she would bang them all out. Every note. So it was a great treat to work with her.”
