“You know, I think it was exhausting for Jen. Because she’s in every shot, and you know I’ve done this before, with Mickey and it’s very hard for them. Because they don’t get the “oh we’re shooting someone else for two days, you have two days off.” They have to be ready every day and the whole production runs around their schedule. So it’s a lot. But she’s totally a light switch actor, which basically means that when you call cut, she’s Jen Lawrence and when you call action she’s mother. And they never really…well that’s not true. Sometimes mother would, like when she knew her back was to the camera, she would ask me something as Jen. That’s how easy it is for her to slide in and out of character. But she’s this autodidact who completely taught herself how to act and it just shows you how, in some ways, and maybe it’s because of her vast talent, how easy it really is. She has a lot of confidence.”

“I know I’m prejudiced about Jennifer Lawrence, because I always have and always will think she’s great. But with each performance, it becomes clear to me that she is one of the Greats, alongside my girl Judi Dench and the indomitable Meryl Streep.”

“I know it’s a lot, but it is necessary. I mean, I hope they’re proud. I hope that they can kind of come into this next journey with me. For me, saying yes to this movie was important to me.”

“As far as raw, natural talent, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like what she has the ability to do.And she has very little formal training. She started acting as a teenager and never went to school for it, yet she’s developed all these techniques that she’s mastered on her own. It was interesting because I think there were a lot of things that the script asked that I have never seen Jennifer do, so I was trying to figure out how we were going to get there. During the rehearsals, she was very, very relaxed. Was present, but never really pushed herself. And it wasn’t appropriate for me to sort of push that, even though I wasn’t sure how she was going to do it. And I really didn’t get to know the character until we started shooting, and she showed up. And it was after the wig came on, and makeup came on, and the costume came on, and the shoes and socks came off — because she’s barefoot in the whole movie — then suddenly she started to get this vocal thing, which was very different for her. And then working with her was … You don’t need to dare or challenge her to go somewhere. She’s totally brave and fearless to go there. You just have to be completely ready and prepared to catch the fastball she’s going to throw at you. Because she suddenly just … It just unleashes and comes out, and you’ve just got to make sure you’re there capturing it in the film, because it’s very, very truthful.”

“I remember getting the phone call that she might be available so I went down to Atlanta and I remember complaining to my producers, like, ‘she’s never gonna do this movie. It’s too crazy, too different.’ But then when we hung out, she really got the idea. She understood the concepts and she was in. And she hasn’t stopped with her loyalty to the film since then.”

“All of Darren’s films have been booed at festivals. We didn’t make this film to be a darling. It is loud, it is aggressive and it is an assault. I love it and I am proud of it, but it is not for everyone. So no, I do not take it personally at all. I actually kind of find it exciting.”
